Garland Martin-Christensen

Garland Martin-ChristensenA North Carolina native, Garland has been listening locally to 89.7 WCPE, The Classical Station, for quite literally all of her life.

Tuning in on her Fisher-Price radio as a small child, it was then that she discovered all of the timeless Classical pieces which gave her a lifelong love and appreciation for Classical Music, History, and inspired her to learn to sing Opera as well as Ballroom Dance. She says it is a dream come true for her becoming an announcer on the station she has gone through every stage of life with, which has influenced her greatly, and she considers it a truly beautiful Circle of Life.

She says that she has never been happier since joining the team here at The Classical Station and is honored to be a part of something so special that brings healing joy to many all over the world, while keeping the beauty and serenity of Classical Music alive for future generations.

In her free time, Garland enjoys volunteering, and has volunteered with The North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences helping educate the public for over twenty years now. She also volunteers at various other cultural arts events, such as performing in Fairest Creatures (an annual reading of all of Shakespeare’s Sonnets performed at the Burning Coal theater, which is part of The North Carolina Shakespeare Festival,) The Festival of Legends, The North Carolina Pirate Festival, The North Carolina Renaissance Festival, and has performed in many stage, musical, and choral productions throughout North Carolina. Garland has also been known to find joy spontaneously serenading strangers out in public with her impromptu Soprano Operatic renditions in various local park amphitheaters on a beautiful day.

A lover of Classical Literature and Poetry, her favorite authors are Sir William Shakespeare, and Edgar Allan Poe. Not surprisingly, she is an avid collector of Antiques, especially from the Victorian era, and considers herself a modern day Victorian. She also enjoys attending various productions and events at the North Carolina Ballet, The North Carolina Symphony, and The North Carolina Opera. Garland particularly enjoys listening to Piano Concertos, haunting Gregorian Chant, Medieval, Renaissance & Celtic music, and of course, Opera. You can find her happily hosting Sleepers, Awake!  among various other programs here on The Classical Station.
