The Philharmonia Orchestra was founded in 1945 in London, and now includes 80 musicians. Throughout its 78-year history the Philharmonia Orchestra has premiered works by Richard Strauss and worked with conductors such as Herbert von Karajan and Esa-Pekka Salonen; currently, it performs under Music Director Santtu-Matias Rouvali.
Tonight, listen to Bizet’s Carmen Suite from his most popular opera in a performance conducted by Herbert von Karajan. Also on the playlist is the Violin Concerto in D Minor, op. 47 by Finnish composer Jean Sibelius, conducted by Salonen. A graduate of Finland’s Sibelius Academy, Salonen shows the intimate understanding he has of Sibelius’ music in tonight’s recording.
