Interview: Barbara Harbach

Barbara Harbach’s story traces a lifetime of stubborn persistence in the face of practical obstacles and casual sexism. From insisting on piano lessons at age four-and-a-half, to winning the respect of Helmut Walcha (who once joked that “women don’t belong on the organ bench”) Harbach shows how disciplined practice, professional excellence, and sheer endurance can quietly overturn old assumptions about who belongs in serious organ and composing careers.
