Scotch Symphony and Creatures of Prometheus: September 12-29th
From the Carolina Ballet: Step into the mystical Scottish Highlands with George Balanchine’s Scotch Symphony, a tribute to the era of Romantic Ballet. Paired with this movement through time, Ted Seymour’s The Creatures of Prometheus highlights the beauty of the arts as a foundation for a peaceful and just society. The Balourdet Quartet & Anna Lampidis: September 15th
UpClose Chamber Music kicks off its 2024-25 season with a performance by the Balourdet Quartet an award-winning violin quartet joined by oboist Anna Lampidis. As part of the Chamber Orchestra of the Triangle performance series at the Ackland Art Museum in Chapel Hill this is a rare opportunity to enjoy the intimacy of chamber music in a beautiful, local, setting. Bach Cantata Series: Chamber Cantatas: September 15th
From Duke Arts: Johann Sebastian Bach’s church cantatas are often considered the pinnacle of German sacred music, works whose theological depth and emotional resonance touch deep places in the human soul. This year, we follow Bach through the various stages of his career, from his earliest appointments in Arnstadt and Mühlhausen, to Weimar, and to the culmination of his work in Leipzig. Each place and each employment offered Bach different opportunities to focus his creative energies. Symphonie Fantastique: September 20-21st
Hector Berlioz’ Symphony Fantastique has been called everything from “wild and bizarre,” to an “outburst of great genius,” to “fantastic raving… [un]intelligible to a sane audience.” Thanks to the North Carolina Symphony we all have an opportunity to go listen and make a determination for ourselves! Beethoven Symphony No. 8: September 26-29th
Beethoven’s 8th Symphony is often called his “little symphony,” but don’t let the nickname fool you—it’s packed with energy, wit, and surprising twists. This joyful and playful work shows Beethoven’s lighter side, with a vibrant pace that will keep you on your toes. Even though it’s shorter than some of his other symphonies, it’s a hidden gem full of charm, and Beethoven’s trademark genius. Kid's Concert - To Space and Beyond!: October 5th
Blast off with the North Carolina Symphony with this extra-terrestrial concert that the whole family can enjoy! Featuring great classical music from Gustav Holst’s The Planets alongside memorable selections from feature films Star Wars and E.T. Organ Recital Series: Alcee Chriss III: October 6th
From Duke Chapel: Alcee Chriss III opens this season’s organ recital series on the Aeolian organ with music by J. S. Bach, Elgar, Litaize, and Rachmaninoff. Dr. Chriss is currently Assistant Organist at Trinity Church Wall Street, New York City, as well as University Organist and Artist-in-Residence at Wesleyan University. Winner of the 2017 Canadian International Organ Competition, he was featured in the PBS documentary Pipe Dreams (2019), and he appeared at the 2022 national convention of the American Guild of Organists. A review of his most recent solo recording, Art et Rhapsodie, stated that “he plays with clarity, imagination, musicality, virtuosity, and yes, personality” (American Record Guide).
