Carolina Ballet's Sleeping Beauty
Carolina Ballet’s Sleeping Beauty

First premiered by the company in 2008, this feisty version of the classic fairy tale of Princess Aurora and her sleepy little problem is a majestic production full of spectacular costumes and set-pieces, including a monumental dragon to be slain by the handsome Prince.

Choreographed by Artistic Director Robert Weiss after Marius Pepita’s magnificent steps and set to Tchaikovsky’s score that soars with romance and magic, Sleeping Beauty is a fantastical fantasy for the whole family to experience.

THE 42ND CIRQUE DU SOLEIL SHOW!
They’ve conquered the air, the forest and even water over the past 30 years. Now they are about to tackle the ice, in an extravaganza that they’ve named… Crystal. Combining world-class skating, beautiful sets, costumes and awe-inspiring aesthetics, take a venture into your reflection to a world you have only ever dreamed of, and become who you’ve always wanted to be. Skating on the edge of reality, Cirque Du Soleil Crystal is an ice experience like no other.
WHAT TO EXPECT
A work of pure escapism, we follow a disenchanted young woman who is yearning for a life that is more exciting than her own. Shattering through a frozen pond, she enters a world so surreal, and full of possibility. At last finding the path that she was truly destined for, this enchanting new show encourages all of us to leave the beaten path to find our true footing in life. Combining death-defying slides, jumps, elegant skating and acrobatics, this is Cirque at its best – and forever pushing the boundaries. Why not see what’s under the surface of your reflection?

Serenade has a special place in Carolina Ballet history, having been performed in the company’s inaugural season. Considered a seminal work in the ballet world, it is the first original work choreographed in the United States by George Balanchine, the father of American ballet. Although Balanchine insisted Serenade had no “story,” it is not without drama and emotion. Serenade brings the romantic music of Tchaikovsky to life in a way that is more poetic than narrative. It is a dream full of mysterious imagery, a dance in the moonlight. Since its creation, many have debated its meaning, but once you experience Serenade, there is no denying its significance.

“Romeo and Juliet has inspired so much great music from so many of our finest composers … we were not looking just for beautiful concert music to reflect the play, but needed to get the right balance of words and music, so as to enhance the play rather than distract from it.”
— Grant Llewellyn, NCS Music Director

Read about the music that inspires and deepens this vision of the play in an essay by music scholars Joseph and Elizabeth Kahn.

Read about the completely unique way we’ll stage the play—around the orchestra, with sword-fighting and all—in an essay by theater critic Byron Woods.
