1. I was born in Wahoo, Nebraska, of Scandinavian descent.
2. In my early youth, I played both the piano and cello.
3. In 1921, I won the Prix de Rome - the most coveted prize for composition. I became the first American to win this honor.
4. In 1924, I met George Eastman. He liked my music so much that he hired me to be Director of the new Eastman School of Music. (Mr. Eastman founded Kodak.)
5. I wrote an opera, "The Maypole Lovers of Merry Mount," which was produced by the Metropolitan Opera in 1934. I and the cast took about 50 curtain calls after the first performance.
6. I received nearly 20 honorary doctorates during my lifetime!
7. My most popular work was my second symphony which I nicknamed "Romantic."
