WCPE Preview! Features Awadagin Pratt, Zuill Bailey

Interview With the Pianist and Cellist to Air Sunday, March 2

WAKE FOREST, N.C. (March 1, 2008)—TheClassicalStation.org announces today that its weekly program, Preview!, will feature an interview conducted by Classical Lunch host Larry Kirwan with pianist Awadagin Pratt and cellist Zuill Bailey. The interview will air during the station’s Sunday, March 2 program that runs from 6-9 p.m.

"Both of these excellent musicians transcend the normal boundaries of classical performance,” says Kirwan. “They not only play at the level of sheer expression, but also truly communicate with their audiences."

The interview discusses their upcoming performance at the Fletcher Opera Theater, Progress Energy Center, Raleigh, N.C. on Sunday, March 9. Kirwan talks to them about their dynamic and engaging performance styles, their long-time friendship and their efforts to enhance community life through education and performances. More information can be found at the Raleigh Chamber Music Guild Web site, rcmg.org.

In central North Carolina and southern Virginia, WCPE is found on the radio at 89.7 FM.

About WCPE:

With a 30-year history, WCPE is a non-commercial, 100 percent listener-supported, independent station dedicated to excellence in Great Classical Music, 24 Hours A Day. Community-minded business underwriters and foundations are among the 150,000 listeners in the North Carolina broadcast area. General Manager Deborah S. Proctor’s leadership has enabled the WCPE community to include national and worldwide listeners. Other radio stations and cable television systems can rebroadcast Great Classical Music, 24 Hours A Day. WCPE is one of the first public broadcasters to stream on the Internet. WCPE is heard worldwide on the Internet in multiple formats, including the next generation IPv6. Because WCPE receives no tax-derived support, the station conducts two on-air fundraising campaigns and two major mail-out campaigns per year to raise needed operating funds. Quarter Notes, the WCPE Program Guide, is published four times a year as a means to enhance appreciation and understanding of classical music. It is distributed to station supporters and is also available online at TheClassicalStation.org/guide. For more information, visit TheClassicalStation.Org or call 1-800-556-5178.

About the Artists:

Awadagin Pratt is acclaimed for his musical insight and intensely involving performances that receive tremendous audience response and press attention throughout the United States. Born in Pittsburgh, Pratt began studying piano at the age of six. At the age of 16, he entered the University of Illinois where he studied piano, violin and conducting. He subsequently enrolled at the Peabody Conservatory of Music where he became the first student in the school's history to receive diplomas in three performance areas - piano, violin and conducting. Pratt is currently an Associate Professor of Piano and Artist in Residence at the College Conservatory of Music at the University of Cincinnati. For more information, visit awadagin.com.

Zuill Bailey has established himself as one of the most sought-after and active cellists today. A graduate of the Peabody Conservatory and The Juilliard School, Bailey's principal teachers were Loran Stephenson, Stephen Kates and Joel Krosnick. He performs on a 1693 Matteo Goffriller cello, formerly owned by Mischa Schneider of the Budapest Quartet. In addition to his extensive touring engagements, Bailey serves as Professor of Cello at the University of Texas-El Paso, and as the Artistic Director of El Paso Pro-Musica.
