WCPE Offers Birthday Tribute to Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart

Mozart Madness to Air January 25 through 27 on TheClassicalStation.org

WAKE FOREST, N.C. (January 20, 2007) — William Woltz, music director for WCPE, TheClassicalStation.org, announces today that the station is offering Mozart Madness the weekend of January 25 in recognition of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s birthday.

The weekend radio festival will capture the full range of Mozart’s compositions, beginning at 8 a.m. ET on January 25 with “Overture to the Marriage of Figaro.” Weekend offerings will include symphonies, concertos, quartets and sonatas. On Mozart’s birthday, January 27, the station’s Great Sacred Music program will feature Mozart’s “Requiem.”

“This year Mozart Madness is an audience participation event,” says Woltz. “Our three-day festival takes in an All-Request Friday and the Saturday Evening Request Program. Our listeners get to choose the works by the Eternal Child, Mozart, that we will air.”

In 1990, a group of psychologists studied Mozart’s written personal history and labeled him as “pathologically optimistic.” WCPE’s Mozart Madness weekend will explore – through music – his exuberance and hope, even when composing during times of personal hardship and despair.

Of particular interest are an All Request Friday from 9 a.m. until 10 p.m. ET and the Saturday Evening Request Program from 6 p.m. until midnight ET. Both of these programs allow listeners to choose their favorite works to be aired. Requests can be made via the Web site at TheClassicalStation.org/request.shtml, by calling the station at 1-800-556-5178 or locally calling (919) 556-5178. Requests can be made in advance or during the programs.

About WCPE:

With a 29-year history, WCPE is a non-commercial, 100 percent listener-supported, independent station dedicated to excellence in Great Classical Music broadcasting. Community-minded business underwriters and foundations are among the 150,000 listeners in the North Carolina broadcast area. General Manager Deborah S. Proctor’s leadership has enabled the WCPE community to include national and worldwide listeners. Other radio stations and cable television systems can rebroadcast Great Classical Music. WCPE is one of the first public broadcasters to stream on the Internet. WCPE is heard worldwide on the Internet in multiple formats, including the next generation IPv6. Because WCPE receives no tax-derived support, the station conducts two on-air fundraising campaigns and two major mail-out campaigns per year to raise needed operating funds. Quarter Notes, the WCPE Program Guide, is published four times a year as a means to enhance appreciation and understanding of classical music. It is distributed to station supporters and is also available online at TheClassicalStation.org/guide. For more information, visit TheClassicalStation.Org or call 1-800-556-5178.
