WCPE Reaches out to the Community

WAKE FOREST, N.C. (December 18, 2007)—When WCPE’s Deana Vassar read the story of 9-year-old Jordan Masuca, she felt she could help him by reaching out to the listeners of her afternoon program, “Allegro.” As a result, much needed pianos have been donated to the city of Raleigh’s “Play it Again, Peanut” music program, giving area children access to music lessons at less-than-market rates.

“I'm overjoyed that we can be a part of getting pianos to children who, like Jordan, need music in their lives,” said Vassar. “Hopefully this is the start of a long relationship between the ‘Play it Again, Peanut’ program and WCPE.”

The story started with a recent column by Barry Saunders in The News & Observer. Jordan was diagnosed with ADHD and autism when he was two years old, and Saunders discussed how piano playing helped Jordan keep focused and calm. Because of Saunders’ and WCPE’s focus on Jordan’s story, Jordan, and many other children, will have the opportunity to have a piano that they otherwise could not afford.

“The outreach by the community has been fantastic,” said Ethel Evans, recreation center supervisor for the Walnut Terrace Community Center that hosts the ‘Play it Again, Peanut’ program. “The pianos will make such a difference in the children’s lives.”

The “Play it Again, Peanut” program needs help with storage, pick up and moving of the pianos. If you would like information on assisting with this effort, call Kimberly Masuca at

About the Play it Again, Peanut Program:

The “Play it Again, Peanut” program is a city of Raleigh program that offers piano lessons for the beginner to the advanced. Hosted at the Walnut Terrace Community Center, the program is for people ages six and older. Participants learn to play by ear, reading notes or by chords.
