For Immediate Release:

The Classical Station, WCPE, ends its Fall Pledge Drive on a successful note

The Classical Station, WCPE, ended its Fall Pledge Drive on a successful note Sunday evening as the radio station slightly exceeded its fund-raising goal of $450,000.

More than 6,000 listeners made pledges by telephone, Internet or mail to support classical music 24 hours a day. Pledges totalled $450,627 by the end of the drive at 9 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 2, 2003.

As in recent pledge drives, an increasing number of pledges came from contributors listening to WCPE via alternative means. WCPE serves central North Carolina and southern Virginia on 89.7 FM and is heard in Aberdeen, N.C., on 88.3 FM. The signal is distributed nationwide on C-band (large dish) satellite and is relayed by some three dozen cable TV systems and affiliated radio stations. WCPE reaches listeners worldwide on the Internet.

Station Manager Deborah S. Proctor said roughly one of every four contributions came from outside the Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill area.

"Thanks to everybody for supporting the music," Proctor said. "As long as they're here, we'll be here. And I intend for that to be a really long time."

WCPE is celebrating its 25th anniversary in broadcasting this year.

Listeners who did not have an opportunity to pledge during the on-air fund-raiser are still invited to mail in a tax deductible-gift. Listeners may also pledge from WCPE's website, TheClassicalStation.org.

WCPE thanks its listeners nationwide for their generous support of Great Classical Music on FM radio, large-dish satellite, the Internet, and selected radio affiliates and cable TV systems throughout the United States.
