For Immediate Release:

WCPE in the running for NAB's "Classical Radio Station of the Year"

Radio station WCPE, 89.7 FM, is among five finalists for "Classical Station of the Year" in the 2003 Marconi Radio Awards from the National Association of Broadcasters.

The nomination comes as WCPE celebrates its 25th year of broadcasting Great Classical Music to central North Carolina and southern Virginia.

WCPE is a member-supported, noncommercial radio station with a mission of bringing classical music to everyone. Based in Raleigh, N.C., WCPE also serves the Sandhills region of North Carolina on 88.3 FM, and is heard worldwide through satellite and Internet technologies. A number of radio stations and cable TV systems distribute WCPE's musical programming throughout North America.

An independent task force selected finalists in 19 awards categories. Ballots will be sent to members of the NAB Marconi Radio Awards Selection Academy in August. The ballots will be tabulated by the accounting firm of KPMG.

The winners in each category will be announced on October 2 at the NAB Marconi Radio Awards Dinner & Show at the Pennsylvania Convention Center in Philadelphia. The annual dinner and show, radio's premier awards program, will also feature comedian Steve Harvey as the emcee.

In addition to WCPE, finalists for NAB's "Classical Station of the Year" are KDFC, San Francisco; KFUO-FM, St. Louis; WFMR, Milwaukee; and WRR, Dallas. Established in 1989 and named after inventor and Nobel Prize winner, Guglielmo Marconi, the Marconi Awards are given to radio stations and outstanding on-air personalities to recognize excellence in radio.

The National Association of Broadcasters, based in Washington, D.C., is a trade association that promotes local radio and television stations' interests in Washington and around the world. NAB also serves a growing number of associate and international broadcaster members.
