For Immediate Release:

WCPE to air live Requiem on Sept. 11

The Classical Station, WCPE, invites listeners to take part in a very special memorial concert on Sept. 11.

WCPE will air a performance of Mozart's Requiem presented by members of the North Carolina Symphony and Triangle-area singers in honor of the victims and heros of the terrorist attacks one year ago that day.

The event is part of a world-wide "Rolling Requiem." Performances of Mozart's moving Requiem, K. 626, will take place in every time zone, beginning at the International Date Line and rolling around the world, hour by hour. Each performance will begin at 8:46 a.m., local time, the moment of the first attack on the World Trade Center. Choirs from Japan, Latvia, Portugal, Brazil and many other countries are expected to join choirs across the United States in this special event.

The Triangle concert will be conducted by Rodney Wynkoop, director of music for Duke (University) Chapel and the Choral Society of Durham. The 350-voice chorus will include members of the Choral Society of Durham, the Duke Chapel Choir, the Duke Chorale, the Chapel Hill Community Chorus and other organizations.

Singers and musicians are donating their services, as is the City of Raleigh, N.C. Network relay services are being donated by Raleigh radio station WRAL-FM and its affiliated North Carolina News Network.

The concert will take place in Meymandi Concert Hall in the BTI Center for the Performing Arts in downtown Raleigh. There is no admission charge and doors will open to the public at 7:30 a.m.

WCPE will air the Raleigh performance live, beginning at 8:44 a.m. The performance of the Requiem should last approximately 55 minutes, with the broadcast expected to end about 9:42 a.m.

The Classical Station, WCPE, can be heard in central North Carolina on 89.7 FM. Listeners in the Sandhills communities of Aberdeen, Pinehurst and Southern Pines may listen on 88.3 FM.
