For Immediate Release:

WCPE web site judged best in nation

TheClassicalStation.org, web site for radio station 89.7 FM, WCPE, has earned top honors nationally in the Silver Microphone Awards for 2002.

The website won in the category of Radio Station Web Site. It has placed as a finalist for the two prior years.

The annual competition is designed to select the best audio programs, web sites, and local and regional radio commercials created by advertising agencies, production companies and radio stations in the United States. Judging criteria include creativity, quality and overall effectiveness.

A panel of judges representing all aspects of the broadcasting and advertising industries rated each entry. Four finalists from each category entered a second round of judging to determine national winners.

TheClassicalStation.org is designed and maintained by Christa Wessel, WCPE's director of web services. Wessel oversees WCPE's online audio services, which involve streaming classical music continuously to a world-wide audience. In addition, she is host of WCPE's afternoon concert, "As You Like It."

Based in Raleigh, N.C., WCPE broadcasts classical music 24 hours a day to listeners in central North Carolina and southern Virginia on 89.7 FM. The station also serves the Sandhills communities of North Carolina on 88.3 FM, and reaches listeners throughout North America by satellite as well as selected cable systems and affiliated radio stations.
