For Immediate Release:

WCPE Spring Pledge Drive a success!!

Listeners of The Classical Station, WCPE, pitched in to bring a successful conclusion to Spring Pledge Drive 2002, a nine-day on-air fund raiser.

The pledge drive reached its goal of $500,000 shortly after 7 p.m. Friday. In all, 6,732 supporters of Great Classical Music made pledges totalling $504,887 by telephone, mail or e-mail, according to Deborah Proctor, WCPE's general manager.

The effort received a major boost in the final two days from the Dr. Roy Propst Memorial Fund. The fund honoring the late Dr. Propst, a physics professor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, matched every pledge dollar received those days.

"We are grateful to Dr. Propst and his family for their support," said WCPE General Manager Deborah Proctor.

Pledges were received from throughout the United States and a number of foreign countries. WCPE is heard worldwide on the Internet and throughout North America on C-band (large dish) satellite and on selected cable TV and radio stations.

Another significant feature was the many individuals who called back during the drive to increase an earlier pledge, Proctor said.

"Silent Pledges" through the mail allowed WCPE to cut seven full days from the beginning of the fund-drive. As a result of Silent Pledges, WCPE listeners were rewarded with more great music and less fund-raising talk.

WCPE receives no funding from any government agency, university or public radio network, and thus is entirely dependent on the support of its listeners. The success of the Spring Pledge Drive will allow WCPE to continue its efforts to provide Great Classical Music worldwide through satellite, Internet and cable television systems while also improving services to members in the station's home base of central North Carolina and Southside Virginia.
