For Immediate Release:

WCPE, The Classical Station, is on the air in the North Carolina Sandhills!

Lovers of classical music in Aberdeen, NC, and nearby communities of Pinehurst and Southern Pines should now be able to enjoy WCPE with a clearer signal, thanks to a new remote broadcasting unit.

The remote transmitter, known as a "translator," receives WCPE's Great Classical Music programming from the Galaxy 5 satellite, amplifies it, and rebroadcasts it on a new frequency, in this case, 88.3 FM. The unit broadcasts with a power of 80 watts.

This gives listeners in that area the option of receiving WCPE on two frequencies: the main signal on 89.7 FM, and the new signal on 88.3 FM. Listeners can choose between the two and listen to the signal that is better in their location.

WCPE, a listener-supported classical music station based near Raleigh in North Carolina's Research Triangle, began transmitting from the translator in downtown Aberdeen Nov. 16 at 8:30 p.m.

The translator should provide good listening for at least six miles from downtown Aberdeen. Some listeners, depending on their location and the quality of their receivers, may experience good reception at greater distances.

Listeners in the Sandhills area of North Carolina have for years asked for a clearer signal from WCPE. Because the area is in the fringe of WCPE's main broadcast signal on 89.7 FM, listeners there often experience static and inconsistent reception.

There will be some transmission interruptions in the coming days as a WCPE engineer fine tunes the equipment setup in Aberdeen. WCPE hopes to keep these interruptions to a minimum.

WCPE's feature programs include the Saturday Evening Request Program, Great Sacred Music on Sunday Mornings, the WCPE Opera House on Thursday nights and, starting Dec. 1, live matinee broadcasts of the ChevronTexaco-Metropolitan Opera on Saturdays.
