For Immediate Release:

WCPE fall pledge drive ends on a positive note

WCPE, the member-supported classical radio station based in Wake Forest, NC, ended its fall pledge drive Friday on an upbeat note, in spite of falling short of its fund-raising goal.

Station Manager Deborah S. Proctor said the station would cut expenses to cope with the shortfall, but pledged that listeners would notice no difference in the on-air sound.

"We all know it has been a different world since Sept. 11," Proctor said.

"We are duty-bound and firmly committed to keeping Great Classical Music alive and healthy at WCPE Radio, and we are looking at this temporary setback as just that: temporary."

Americans have made generous donations in recent weeks to organizations aiding victims of the Sept. 11 attacks. That, combined with a weakened economy, has hampered the fundraising efforts of many other non-profit organizations.

WCPE listeners had pledged $453,448 by the end of Fall Pledge Drive 2001 at 10 p.m. Friday. That amounts to nearly 82.5 percent of the radio station's original goal of $550,000.

Some 6,046 listeners made pledge calls or sent in "silent pledges" through the mail, and 162 members made Angel Challenge grants, matching the gifts of other members. WCPE heard from listeners in central North Carolina and Virginia, and had a strong helping hand from new listeners in nearly every state as well as servicemen based outside the U.S. In addition, pledges were received from Canada, Mexico, the British Virgin Islands, Bermuda, Taiwan, China, Spain, Switzerland and Japan.

WCPE is heard across North America on satellite and selected cable television systems and FM rebroadcasters, and around the world on the Internet.

WCPE, an independent, non-commercial station, depends on the pledge drive result to cover operating expenses for the next six months. The station receives no funding from any government agency, university or public radio network.
