For Immediate Release:
WCPE renews commitment to Great Classical Music
As classical music leaves the air at one local public radio station, WCPE pledges more strongly than ever to serve listeners in North Carolina and beyond with the Great Classical Music they love.
Officials of WUNC, the National Public Radio affiliate based at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, say the station will expand its news and information programming beginning Sept. 3. In doing so, WUNC will end daily classical music programs.
Deborah S. Proctor, WCPE general manager, said Friday she respects WUNC's decision to build on its already strong news and information service. That choice, however, makes WCPE's mission of bringing commercial-free Great Classical Music to the world even more important.
"Let me assure you that WCPE will always program the finest in classical music, hosted around the clock by live announcers," Proctor said. "It's what we do best. And it's what listeners want from us. They've told us time and time again through their support for our programming. Now continued support for classical music is more important than ever."
WCPE continues to reach out to the world via C-band satellite, cable TV affiliates and Internet streaming from WCPE.org. In this way the station can serve communities that may have no other access to daily classical music programming, a valuable educational resource.
WCPE's weekly features include opera, sacred music, new releases and request programs, with 10 daily news updates from the BBC World Service.
Member-supported WCPE serves central North Carolina and southern Virginia on 89.7 FM. For information on other services, listeners may visit www.WCPE.org, or phone 1-800-556-5178.
The changes in local public radio will provide this region with stronger news coverage. WCPE's unwavering commitment to Great Classical Music will ensure the finest in musical programming for listeners here and around the world.
