For Immediate Release:
WCPE adds MP3 to online capabilities
WCPE 89.7 FM, the home of Great Classical Music, is pleased to announce the
newest addition to its slate of online streaming technologies.
WCPE is now streaming its non-commercial classical music programming on the
Internet in MP3 format. The MP3 stream joins WCPE's existing RealAudio,
Windows Media and QuickTime offerings.
WCPE is perhaps the only public radio station to offer listeners so many
choices in Internet audio. By doing so, WCPE is trying to ensure that every
listener has access to Great Classical Music in his favorite format. This
also better positions WCPE to be available on new "Internet appliances,"
devices that allow listeners to enjoy online audio through a conventional
stereo system.
WCPE's online services are gaining in popularity. The editors of PC
Magazine recently named WCPE as their favorite online classical station
(After Hours: The All-Request Web, in the May 22 edition.) WCPE is
consistently rated by MeasureCast Inc. as the top classical station in
online listenership and among the top 25 online stations in all formats
WCPE's MP3 streams are provided by ibiblio.org, an online library of
freely available information that includes software, music, literature,
art, history, science, politics, and cultural studies. ibiblio.org is a
collaboration of the Center for the Public Domain and The University of
North Carolina at Chapel Hill's School of Journalism and Mass
Communication, School of Information and Library Science, and Information
Technology Services.
