King’s Noyse in music of John Dowland
(1563–1626) from the album Seaven Teares.
Dowland’s music tugs at the heart strings of
the 21st century listener just as it touched his
17th century audience.
6/14 — Divertimenti, a London-based string
quartet, plays Rhapsody No. 1 of Sir George
Dyson (1883–1964). Dyson was deeply influenced
by the music of Richard Strauss as we’ll
hear in tonight’s performance.
6/21 — Soprano Susan Gritton and baritone
Stephan Loges, joined by pianist Eugene Asti,
perform songs by Clara Wieck Schumann.
The wife of the great composer Robert
Schumann, Clara was a prodigious talent in
her own right.
6/28 — Rene Clemencic directs the Clemencic
Consort in a Missa sine nomine by the 15th
century Franco-Flemish composer Johannes
Ockeghem. Written on an archetonic scale, it
foreshadows many grand works of Palestrina
and Bach composed centuries later.
7/5 — We celebrate Canada Day (July 1) and
Independence Day (July 4) with music which
speaks to the resilient spirit of these two great
countries. Music by Healey Willan, Aaron
Copland, Leonard Bernstein and John
Williams graces our playlist.
7/12 — The Black Madonna is a CD featuring
pilgrim songs from the Monastery of
Montserrat (1400–1420). Ensemble Unicorn
under the direction of Michael Posch performs
this striking music of the middle ages.
7/19 — One of the leading lute players of our
time, Paul O’Dette, plays Elizabethan ballad
settings for us on the 8-course lute, the
orpharion and a 4-course cittern. These sublime
pieces will whisk you off to another time
and place in a nano-second.
7/26 — The Choir of St. John’s Church,
Elora, Ontario, Canada, under the direction
of Noel Edison, sings settings of several
psalms. Music of Lennox Berkeley, Herbert
Sumsion and Ivor Atkins will be featured.
8/2 — Anonymous 4 is one of finest vocal
ensembles of our generation. The ethereal
voices and consummate musicianship of these
four female singers will transport you; enjoy
selections from their CD entitled Portrait.
8/9 — Richard Hickox conducts the BBC
Symphony Orchestra in a performance of
Piano Concerto No. 1 by Herbert Howells
(1892 –1983) with Howard Shelley, piano.
8/16 — Christ Triumphant is the title of Wells
Cathedral Choir’s first CD in their series The
English Hymn. This CD features great hymntunes
of the 20th century.
8/23 — The 11th century mystic, Abess
Hildegard von Bingen, suffered from
migraines. These debilitating attacks led to her
composing some of the most ecstatic music of
all time. We’ll sample selections from her
ouevre.
8/30 — Spanish pianist Alicia de Larrocha plays
a Sonatina by her countryman, Ernesto
Halffter (1905 –1989), as well excerpts from
Cancons i dansas of Federico Mompou.
