Upcoming Highlights | Recent Playlists

Spring Highlights:

6/7 — Violinist David Douglass directs The King’s Noyse in music of John Dowland (1563–1626) from the album Seaven Teares. Dowland’s music tugs at the heart strings of the 21st century listener just as it touched his 17th century audience.

6/14 — Divertimenti, a London-based string quartet, plays Rhapsody No. 1 of Sir George Dyson (1883–1964). Dyson was deeply influenced by the music of Richard Strauss as we’ll hear in tonight’s performance.

6/21 — Soprano Susan Gritton and baritone Stephan Loges, joined by pianist Eugene Asti, perform songs by Clara Wieck Schumann. The wife of the great composer Robert Schumann, Clara was a prodigious talent in her own right.

6/28 — Rene Clemencic directs the Clemencic Consort in a Missa sine nomine by the 15th century Franco-Flemish composer Johannes Ockeghem. Written on an archetonic scale, it foreshadows many grand works of Palestrina and Bach composed centuries later.

7/5 — We celebrate Canada Day (July 1) and Independence Day (July 4) with music which speaks to the resilient spirit of these two great countries. Music by Healey Willan, Aaron Copland, Leonard Bernstein and John Williams graces our playlist.

7/12 — The Black Madonna is a CD featuring pilgrim songs from the Monastery of Montserrat (1400–1420). Ensemble Unicorn under the direction of Michael Posch performs this striking music of the middle ages.

7/19 — One of the leading lute players of our time, Paul O’Dette, plays Elizabethan ballad settings for us on the 8-course lute, the orpharion and a 4-course cittern. These sublime pieces will whisk you off to another time and place in a nano-second.

7/26 — The Choir of St. John’s Church, Elora, Ontario, Canada, under the direction of Noel Edison, sings settings of several psalms. Music of Lennox Berkeley, Herbert Sumsion and Ivor Atkins will be featured.

8/2 — Anonymous 4 is one of finest vocal ensembles of our generation. The ethereal voices and consummate musicianship of these four female singers will transport you; enjoy selections from their CD entitled Portrait.

8/9 — Richard Hickox conducts the BBC Symphony Orchestra in a performance of Piano Concerto No. 1 by Herbert Howells (1892 –1983) with Howard Shelley, piano.

8/16 — Christ Triumphant is the title of Wells Cathedral Choir’s first CD in their series The English Hymn. This CD features great hymntunes of the 20th century.

8/23 — The 11th century mystic, Abess Hildegard von Bingen, suffered from migraines. These debilitating attacks led to her composing some of the most ecstatic music of all time. We’ll sample selections from her ouevre.

8/30 — Spanish pianist Alicia de Larrocha plays a Sonatina by her countryman, Ernesto Halffter (1905 –1989), as well excerpts from Cancons i dansas of Federico Mompou.
