Classical Radio Station WCPE Adds Local Frequency
WCPE, the classical music station, is on the air in Moore County at 88.3 FM.
The station went on the air on the new frequency at 8:30 p.m. Friday, after a remote broadcasting unit was placed on a water tank in Aberdeen. The remote transmitter, known as a "translator," receives WCPE's signal from the Galaxy 5 satellite, amplifies it and rebroadcasts it on a new frequency. The unit broadcasts with a power of 80 watts.
Moore County listeners have the option of receiving WCPE on two frequencies: the main signal on 89.7 FM, or the new signal on 88.3 FM. Listeners can choose whichever signal is clearer in their location.
The new signal should be clear at least six miles from downtown Aberdeen, a WCPE spokesman said. Depending on one's location and the quality of the receiving equipment, the signal may be clear for longer distances.
WCPE broadcasts from a location north of Raleigh. Moore County is in the fringe area for reception of the main signal, and demand for WCPE broadcasts in Moore County intensified after WUNC-FM in Chapel Hill changed to an all-news format a few months ago. WCPE leased space from the town of Aberdeen for its Moore County translator on the town-owned water tower.
The WCPE spokesman said there would be some transmission interruptions in the coming days as a WCPE engineer fine-tunes the new signal.
