INTERNET-ONLY BROADCASTERS GAIN LARGER AUDIENCES IN APRIL REPORTS MEASURECAST
PORTLAND, Ore. May 3, 2001 - Internet-only broadcasters measured by MeasureCast, Inc. enjoyed larger audiences in April than they did in March, possibly due to terrestrial radio stations temporarily pulling their streams off the Internet because of the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (AFTRA) Recorded Commercials Contract. This according to the April Internet Radio Report from MeasureCast, the first company to provide Internet radio broadcasters and other streaming media content providers with next-day audience size and demographics information.
Among the top 50 stations in the April MeasureCast rankings, 22 are Internet-only broadcasters, and 28 are terrestrial stations simulcasting their programs over the Web. Internet -only broadcasters were the big winners last month, streaming 29 percent more hours of programming than they did in March. Meanwhile, the April Total Time Spent Listening (TTSL) for terrestrial stations declined 38 percent compared to March. Several Internet-only stations enjoyed dramatic increases in TTSL, including: 3wk.com, which saw a 138% jump in TTSL thanks to aggressive marketing efforts; Morfeo's Onda Cero station increased its TTSL 89%; Jazzmanmusic.com from TheBroadcastWeb.com experienced a 67% increase in TTSL; and MEDIAmazing.com, the number one station in the MeasureCast rankings, boosted TTSL by 33%.
