WCPE's Rating on Charity Navigator
One of the best independent auditing groups is Charity
Navigator. We had their very-difficult-to-achieve overall top
rating, four stars, for many years. However, one of their
criteria for overall four stars is constant financial growth, and
we slipped in this category when we were reviewed in November of
2006.
Recall that our 2005 fund drives didn't meet their
goals. It appears as if that fact caused us to slip from their
overall four star criteria when three fundraising stars got
averaged into our otherwise four star score.
WCPE was dropped to three stars in the sub-category that
rates total gifts made to us. This growth category is
important to our overall rating. Realistically, when you miss
your spring and fall drives and have to scramble in your rating's
year, you're not "exceeding standards". (You'll recall
that we had to tighten our belts that year to make ends meet.)
We maintained our "four star rating" in the sub-category of
using your gifts properly -- we continue to "exceed standards
and outperform most charities in our cause" in the way we
budget for the station.
Getting "stars" for fundraising isn't what we're here for, but
unfortunately it affected our overall rating and some new Donors
may use the overall rating in determining their giving. So I
wanted you to hear about this from me first.

Summary:
We maintained
our four star sub-category rating when we were reviewed on
the way we spend your donation dollar, and to
me.
Charity Navigator continues to rank WCPE
close to the top (recently in the top ten) of all public radio
stations listed in their "Public Broadcasting and Media"
category. (Use their advanced search option to find the appropriate category, then sort by "Rating" to see this.) Being in the top ten
is a great honor for our station.
