The play is about Sharky (Holden Hansen), a basically decent though troubled handyman, and his older brother, Richard (Peter Haig), who has drunk himself blind. They gather on Christmas Eve in their dilapidated house in Dublin to play poker with a couple of friends, the ever-ebullient Ivan (David Dossey) and the shifty Nicky Giblin (Stephen LeTrent). But on this night, Nicky has brought along a man he met in a nearby pub, Mr. Lockhart (Randolph Curtis Rand). Lockhart has come to claim something promised him twenty years before.

In this short (under one hour) concert, [dnme] is offering three lesser known works by some of the masters of the 20th century and two new works by members of the Duke Music Department: Olivier Messiaen's "Merle Noir" (1952) for flute and piano; Peter Maxwell Davies's"Little Quartet No. 1" (1980); a movement from George Crumb's "Celestial Mechanics" (1979) for amplified piano four hands, the
fourth part of his Makrokosmos series; a new duo for flute and violin titled "New Baroque-ish Miniatures" (2010) by first year Duke composition graduate student Jamie Keesecker; and "Contrafunktus," a structured improvisation by Duke composition professor Anthony Kelley.

Yuja Wang, named “the most important new pianist to appear in recent years” by The Detroit News, will ignite the stage with her performance of Rachmaninoff’s fiery Piano Concerto No. 3. Ms. Wang, although only 22, already exhibits both a mastery of complex technique and a unique, intoxicating eloquence. “The North Carolina Symphony greatly anticipates the wonderful contrast of the pieces in the program,” says Music Director Grant Llewellyn. The addition of Ms. Wang will undoubtedly help the orchestra express the themes of “Fire and Ice” in a manner that will both challenge and excite audiences.

Composer, choreographer and Haitian Vodou priest Erol Josue comes to Durham, NC for a special benefit concert. Presented by Duke University with contributions and donations from local artists and businesses, including The Poster Guys, Whole Foods, and more. Josue writes: “This performance of song, drumming and dance is meant to support Haiti in the wake of the earthquake. We take this road in order to sing our country, to embark on a new pilgrimage, and gather together as we seek to change the destiny of our country. All proceeds from this event will be donated to the Red Cross to help provide immediate assistance to those affected by this tragedy.

It may cold and wintery outside but the Cary Town Band invites you to come in, warm up, and join the band on a mid-winter tour of the Middle East. Recall all the exotic sights and sounds of that ancient area of the world. You’ll visit Egypt with a march, a waltz, and the Ballet Egyptien. Moving eastward, you’ll find Nobles of the Mystic Shrine and The Sheik of Araby, Arabian, of course. To the north in Turkey, there’s Mozart’s Turkish March and a rubdown with Allen’s Turkish Towel Rag. Farther east find yourself In a Persian Market ŕ la Ketelbey. And even farther east you’ll see The Procession of the Sardar. A marvelous excursion with a few little side trips thrown in for fun. It’s a mid-winter caravan you won’t want to miss.
