  • Organization: Burning Coal Theatre Company
    Event: MusiCoal Summer Series Burning Coal Theatre Company will present a season of new music, the MusiCoal Summer Series, at Meymandi Theatre at the Murphey School, 224 Polk Street, Raleigh, NC. The series will take place on the second Sunday of each month from May to October. Call (919) 834-4001 for more details. Reservations are not necessary, tickets will be sold at the door for each event on a first come, first served On Sunday, May 11th, ELM collective, a fusion of jazz and work timbres and rhythms, with Arabic and Mediterranean overtones, will have a CD release party.


  • Organization: North Carolina Symphony
    Event: Showstoppers Members of the North Carolina Symphony will be featured in a series of solos and more in the Pops Concert, "Showstoppers." David Hartmen shares the stage with Music Director Grant Llewellyn. Performances are Thursday, May 8th, at 8 p.m. in Reeves Auditorium, Methodist University, Fayetteville; and in Meymandi Concert Hall in Raleigh on Friday and Saturday, May 9th and 10th, at 8 p.m., and Sunday, May 11th, at 3 p.m.


  • Organization: Triad Chamber Music Society
    Event: Season Finale: The Four Seasons by Vivaldi and Piazzolla The Triad Chamber Music Society performs a Baroque Classic against a modern, Argentinean work in their season finale: "The Four Seasons by Vivaldi and Piazzolla." This program will be performed on Thursday, May 8th, at 7:30 p.m., at the UNCG School of Music Recital Hall, Greensboro,

    Event: Exhibitions Currently on Display The Hickory Museum of Art offers the following exhibits, currently on display at the SALT Block Arts and Science Center of Catawba Valley, 243 3rd Avenue N.E., Hickory, N.C. Regular hours of operation are Tuesday through Saturday, from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m., and Sunday from 1 until 4 p.m. Admission is free. "Doug Marlette: His Art and His Words--From Kudzu to The Bridge" honors the late cartoonist now through Sunday, September 14th.

    Event: The Importance of Place The Raleigh Art's commission presents the exhibit "The Importance of Place: Images from Near & Far" by Russel Gorga. This exhibit will be on display through Tuesday, June 10th, at the Miriam Preston Block Gallery, Avery C. Upchurch Government Complex, 222 W. Hargett Street, Raleigh.

    Event: Auditions for 2008/2009 Season Burning Coal Theatre Company announces auditions for its 2008/2009 season of plays in Raleigh, NC. The season includes "the Prisoner's Dilemma", "Hysteria," "Twelfth Night," "Way to Heaven," and "1960." Auditions will be held on Saturday, June 14th, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Meymandi Theatre at the Murphey School, 224 Polk Street, Raleigh, NC. Actors should please bring two copies of their picture/resume (if available) and bring two one- minute monologues (one classical, one contemporary).

    Event: Summer Theater Conservatory Applications Burning Coal Theatre Company is now accepting applications for its Summer Theater Conservatory for 2008. Ian Finley directs both the STC Jr. and the STC Sr. conservatories. STC Jr. is open to students in 6th through 8th grade, and runs from July 7th through 18th. STC Sr. is open to high school students interested in rigorous, professional training, and runs July 21st through August 8th. Both culminate in a showcase Applications are due no later than June 1st, 2008. Auditions for STC Sr. students will be held in late June to cast the production of Shakespeare's As You Like It.     Event: Volunteer Announcement The Johnston County Arts Council is looking for volunteers to assist in the organization's growth and progress. Volunteer activities include assisting with special events, filing, preparing mailings, data entry, and other office duties as needed. All ages, backgrounds, and experience are invited to help support the arts and the community in a meaningful way.   • Organization: Temple Theatre
    Event: Youth Conservatory The Temple Theatre Youth Conservatory announces registration for its annual summer program, with two sessions being held due to increased participation. Dates for the first session are June 23-July 13 and the second session July 21-August 10. Each session will culminate in a full- scale production of Roald Dahl's Willy Wonka Junior, to be presented on the Temple stage. Registration will begin Wednesday, April 9 at 10:00 a.m. in the Temple Theatre lobby, located at 120 Carthage St. in downtown Sanford. Each session is open to youth ages 8-18 and enrollment will be limited to 38 students. Several need-based scholarships will be offered and applications are available at the Temple Theatre Business Office. Please inquire about scholarship applications prior to enrollment.     Event: Barkley Hendricks: Birth of the Cool The Nasher Museum of Art at Duke University invites you to celebrate the exhibition, Barkley L. Hendricks: Birth of the Cool. Hendricks is famous for his bold portrayal of his subjects, mostly people of color. This exhibit runs through July 13th, 2008.

    Event: Pops Concerts in the Spring The Durham Symphony announces their schedule of Pops Concerts for this Spring. The final concert of the series will be on Saturday, May 3rd, at the Farmer's Market Pavilion, Durham Central Park.


  • Organization: Mallarme Chamber Players
    Event: Baroque and Brand New Mallarme Chamber Players presents "Baroque and Brand New," the last in this season's "At Home With Mallarme" series. Performing will be Rebecca Troxler, flute; Bo Newsome, oboe; Stephanie Vial, cello; Elaine Funaro, harpsichord, with special guest artist Paige Whitley- Bauguess, baroque dance.   • Organization: North Carolina Symphony
    Event: Ilya Gringolts/Beethoven's Choral Symphony The North Carolina Symphony performs Karel Husa's Violin Concerto with violinist Ilya Gringolts. Also on the program is Beethoven's Symphony No. 9, the "Choral," featuring Jane Jennings, soprano; Stacey Richoi, mezzo-soprano; Richard Clement, tenor; Raymond Aceto, bass; the North Carolina Master Chorale; and the choral Society of Durham Chamber Choir. Performances are Thursday, May 1st, at 8 p.m. in Duke Chapel, Duke University, Durham; and Friday and Saturday, May 2nd and 3rd, at 8 p.m. at Meymandi Concert Hall, Raleigh.


  • Organization: Triangle Brass Band
    Event: Farewell Concert - Dr. Michael Votta Dr. Michael Votta will conduct his final concert with the Triangle Brass Band as their Music Director in a special "Farewell Concert" program. This event is on Friday, May 2nd, at 8 p.m. at Fletcher Theater, Progress Energy Center for the Performing Arts, Raleigh, N.C.


  • Organization: Women's Voices Chorus
    Event: Songs of Innocence and Dreams Women's Voices Chorus presents their Spring concert, "Songs of Innocence and Dreams," full of nursery rhymes as well as folk song settings from England, Canada, Samoa, Wales, and elsewhere. The concert is on Sunday, May 4th, at 4 p.m. at University United Methodist Church, 150 E. Franklin Street, Chapel Hill, NC.

    Event: The Hole Burning Coal Theatre Company announces a staged reading of "The Hole," a new play by Kelly Doyle of Raleigh. Admission is free with a suggested donation of $5.00. No reservations are necessary. "The Hole" will be read on Monday, April 28th at 7 p.m. at the Meymandi Theatre, Murphey School, 224 Polk Street, Raleigh.


  • Organization: Chapel Hill Philharmonia
    Event: CHP Spring Concert The Chapel Hill Philharmonia presents their Spring Concert. Student Concerto Competition winner Melissa Chan performs Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 3, first movement, with the Philharmonia. Also featured will be the Symphony No. 5 by young composer Jay Greenburg. Admission is free. The concert is on Sunday, May 4th, at 7:30 p.m. in Hill Hall Auditorium, UNC-Chapel Hill.


  • Organization: Clayton Center
    Event: Clayton Visual Arts Exhibit in April The Clayton Center announces an exhibit featuring the art of photographer Joy Winer and acrylic painter Dean Sauls. This runs from April 1st through the 30th.

    Event: Lecture/Workshops Series The Johnston County Arts Council is offering a lecture/workshop series this spring, covering artistic disciplines from modern dance and art history, poetry and popular music.     Event: 2007-2008 Concert Season The Library of Congress announces their 2007-2008 Concert Season. Performances are free to the public, but unless otherwise indicated, tickets are required. Interested patrons are encouraged to come to the Library by 6:30 p.m. on concert nights to wait in the standby line for no-show tickets. The Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia with Ignat Solzhenitsyn, conductor and pianist, will perform Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 21 in C Major and Beethoven's Symphony No. 6 in F Major, the "Pastoral", on Friday, May 2nd.

    Event: A Tribute to Our Homeland Concert The Wake Forest-Rolesville High School Wind Ensemble, Concert Band, Orchestra, and Chorus, with guest performances by local middle school students, will be holding a joint concert, held as a tribute to those serving our country. It will feature patriotic selections and music by American composers. Admission is free, but donations (appropriate gift items or monetary) are strongly suggested; these will be sent to, or be used to purchase items for, our troops serving overseas. "A Tribute to Our Homeland" will be on Tuesday, 29 April, at 7:00PM in the Wake Forest-Rolesville High School Auditorium, Wake Forest, NC.

  • Organization: Temple Theatre
    Event: A Gallery Crawl to Benefit Temple Theatre. Temple Theatre will partner with downtown Sanford to hold a Gallery Crawl. Participants will enjoy select wines at downtown venues as they pre-view artwork to be auctioned off at Temple’s third annual gala on May 17. Additional artwork will be available for on the spot purchase. Participants will also be treated to live performances at the Theatre, as well as music on the street. Tickets will be sold at the Temple Theatre and at local downtown shops The Gallery Crawl will be held on Saturday, May 3 from 5:00- 8:00 p.m. in downtown Sanford, NC.

    Event: Auditions for Bel Canto The Bel Canto Company will hold auditions for experienced singers with exceptional musicianship and reading skills. Auditions will be Monday, April 28th, from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m., and Tuesday, April 29th, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., with a mandatory group audition on the 29th at 8:30 p.m., at UNCG School of Music, Room 110.
